Behind Her Eyes

Photo by Chris Ord, TrailRun Mag

Beware the young girl that runs by your house,
With an ineffable look in her eyes;
She may seem happy as she floats right on by,
But oh, when alone how she cries.

And yet she is fierce in her power of will,
And the way she embraces hard work;
She will push harder than many can fathom,
No matter which demons may lurk.

That power in her legs helped save her life,
As it strengthened her body and soul;
The repetitive movements calm her fractured mind,
Until once again she feels whole.

When her world feels empty and colours turn grey,
To that sacred pavement she turns;
But alas from the moments this was not an option,
Her body is riddled with burns.

Sessions in circles full of pain and exhaustion,
Can reignite her fragile spark;
But it’s runs on the roads that go on forever,
That provide a true light in the dark.

Why then beware of this young running girl,
You see out there every day?
Because that young girl has experienced life,
In a totally different way.

The lessons she’s learned and horrors she’s seen,
Have taught her things most people deny;
As they wander about in ignorant bliss,
Of what caused that look in her eye.

And so you may see her, talk with her in depth,
or just give a smile and wave;
But you won’t understand her complex inner world,
And the ways in which she must be brave.

Utterings of my mind when running past the same awesome elderly lady while she was watering her garden for the third day in a row
